Common SEO Mistakes to avoid for better SEO results

It is pretty common to make mistakes and we all do it while working. In digital marketing world, a mistake could cost you a lot if you don’t fix it before it’s too late. Being a SEO Strategist myself, I learned from my mistakes and today I am going to talk about few common SEO mistakes. After going through this information, I hope you will be able to avoid all these common SEO mistakes.

Let’s start with Common SEO mistakes in On Page SEO

Title Optimization

Not optimizing title is pretty common SEO mistake for beginners. Most of the time we don’t work on the home page title tag which is very important. If you are the one who have not optimized title tag for your blog/website homepage then you need a new title tag that incorporates your business or priority keyword as well as your brand name.

Once you are done with the home page, you can follow the process and apply the same method for other priority pages. Here you can consider your product pages, services page, Contact Information or about the organization pages. You need to write title tags that incorporate relevant keyword associated with that page’s contents. It would be great if you could add your brand name at the end of the title tag.

Note that title tags should only be 50-60 characters in length (65 max), so you have limited space to work with.

Duplicate Pages

Duplicate pages are generally the pages with different URL and same content. Most commonly business websites face these problems after creating multiple promotional landing pages. If you are a business owner and having a website with an on-going promotion then you need a promotional landing page. But you need to be very careful while using same content on different pages. For example, you are offering discount or cashback and running an advertisement campaign for the same, your users are landing on your promotional page but if you are planning to re-launch campaign after certain period of time, then you need a new promotional landing page with fresh content related to campaign.

Pro Tip: You can also use noindex tag to avoid such problems on promotional pages. It is a good practice to avoid getting promotional pages cached.

Missing Contact Information

Internet is a virtual world where you need to create trust between your website visitors or users. If you are running a product/services website then providing proper contact information is mandatory for you. However, if you are running a blog or informative portal then you can provide basic contact information such as email or alternative contact resources as such social pages. Create a contact page according to your website/blog and provide relevant information to your website visitors/users.

The ideal position of providing contact information is at the header section of website or at the footer of every page on your website. That way any visitors to the site can easily get in contact with you when they’re looking at your homepage or a product/service page.

Missing or Template Meta data

Creating Meta data is one of the most important tasks while working for better SEO results. This is one of the most common SEO mistakes which people made while creating content pages. You need to create unique Meta data for every page you have on your website. Using same Meta description would be counted as duplicate Meta description. Never use Meta description templates for pages.

Pro Tip: If you have uploaded images on your blog/website then do the Image Optimization to avoid getting errors of duplicate Meta. In earlier version of Google Webmaster Tool, we used to get reports of duplicate Meta tags under “HTML Improvements” which is scheduled to be removed by March 29 2019.

Common SEO Mistakes - Duplicate Meta

But unfortunately, these reports are removed and now we can third party tools to track down the duplicate Meta data.

Once you start working on these on page SEO Mistakes, you will get the best possible outcome.

Let’s discuss some Common SEO Mistake in while doing Off Page SEO

Not Optimizing Toxic Backlinks

This is of the most common SEO mistakes we do while doing Off-Page SEO. It gives us a great feeling when we see number of backlinks in search console under “Top linking sites”. But it is equally important to filter the results and find out toxic backlinks and get rid of them as quick as possible. For this you need to check the spam score of the referring domain and if you find it less trustworthy then use disavow tool to get rid of that link. (Here is how to use Disavow Tool)

Common SEO mistakes - Optimizing Toxic links

In Above image you can see few toxic links which I need to get rid for better backlinking results. You can also optimize your backlinks on regular basis to get better performance. It will also help you to decrease the chances of search engine penalty and spam attacks.

Mobile Friendliness

According to significant growth in mobile traffic, it is important for every website/blog owner to create a mobile friendly website. Having a good UI/UX would work on desktop and laptop devices but it won’t work on mobile device until you get a responsive or mobile friendly portal. Mobile searches are taking over desktop searches and very soon the difference between mobile searches and desktop searches would be huge. So you should always consider your audience preferred device. If you are not sure about the most preferred device used for your website then you can take help of google analytics.

Here is how you can find which device is used to surf your website or blog.

Login to google analytics

Go to “Audience” from left hand side menu

Choose Mobile and select “Overview”

Refer the screenshot below:

Common SEO Mistakes - Devices overview

As you can see in the image, I can easily identify which device is used by user to surf my website by the help of google analytics.

Blocking Script

Not everyone is doing this but few website owners user this method to avoid search engines to read huge CSS or Java Script. They put Disallow tag in robots.txt file so that crawlers could skip the script and read HTML only. Fooling crawlers is not a good idea if you are looking for long term growth. If you are worried about the heavy scripts then try to minify them and increase the use of HTML as much as possible.

Incorrect use of NoFollow

It is also one of the common SEO mistakes which we do if we have user generated content on domain or subdomains or external links. If you are running a website and have external links such as partners, sponsors, affiliations, recommendations then you can put the nofollow tag on those external links. Basically it is the concept to inform search engines about the links which are not related to your website/business. But I have seen people using the same technique on social pages and sub-domain user generated data in the form of comments and feedbacks.

So this was the list of few common SEO mistakes which we do while doing SEO. Do comment below your feedback and share your suggestions if you want to add some more points in it. Hope this information would help you to avoid these mistakes and perform better SEO for your website or blog.

Increase Blog Traffic – Building a blog audience

Increase Blog Traffic

If you are a digital marketers or SEO specialist who runs a blog, then you must be looking to increate blog traffic. Most likely we apply the best marketing techniques to build blog audience so that we could represent our blog to a larger audience. But if we didn’t get results as we expect or according to our work, then we need a better plan to increase blog traffic. Every blogger in the world rely on content and some amazing marketing techniques to increase web traffic. You can do this by creating a strong SEO Strategy and using the entire white hat SEO Tips.

But apart from building SEO Strategy and applying all of your brain in marketing tricks, you can also work on audience type. Building a blog audience is an important technique to increase the audience type so that you could capture broad audience and get traffic boost for your blog. Generating free traffic or you can say organic traffic is one of the best options to keep your blog in SERP.

Today I am going to talk about how can to increase blog traffic by building a blog audience. So let’s start but before that let’s understand what is audience and audience type for a blog or website.

Blog Audience

Blog audience is a group of people who visit a particular blog to find out the information of their interest. For example, TheSEOGuy is a platform for people who are looking for SEO Answers and have interest in digital marketing especially in SEO Techniques, SEO Tips and information on SEO Work. People who visit frequently on my blog are my blog audience. Being a digital marketer I can assume that my audience type would be the people who have interest in digital marketing. But that’s now how we should work. In order to find or review blog audience, I need numbers. And for that I can use tracking tools such as Google Analytics.

Website Audience

Similar to blog audience, it is also the group of people who visit a particular website but not only for information. We can take the example of few highest traffic websites such as e-commerce websites, product platforms and services platforms. Here people often visit to either find out the information or get services or product. This is the basic difference between both the audiences. Blogs contain only information, if you are looking for services or products then you have to visit the corporate website.

Building a Blog Audience

Building a blog audience is easy if you know the basic steps to do it. First understand the behaviour of your visitors and then create strategies.  There are few good steps which you can follow to increase blog traffic by building a larder blog audience.

Step 1: Bloggers Network

Getting into bloggers network and making a contribution worth a lot. You can interact with different bloggers and exchange your knowledge. All you need to do is engage with different bloggers on social platforms and help each other in solving problems. Leaving a helpful comment on other blogs or blogging network platform will give maximum exposure on your blog. It would be great if you take part in same niche community. It will be easier for you to exchange words if you have knowledge about the topic.

Step 2: Make your contribution

Make your contribution on different blogs. You need to identify the blogs with same niche and make a contribution so that you both could get some hike in blog traffic. This is the toughest part where you need to pitch the blog owner and explain the benefit of your contribution. Prepare a strong pitch to explain the benefit and how you can help them.

Step 3: Build better response rate

If you have done a guest post then keep an eye on it and respond to user comments even if the blog owner doesn’t. Keep your visitors engaged to build more trust on your content. It will help you to gain more returning users on your blog and increase blog traffic.

Step 4: Work hard on content

Writing interesting and newsworthy content can lead to build a strong audience. For this you can take help of tools such as Talkwalker Alerts, Google alerts and Buzzsumo. You can collect the information and publish a blog based on interesting and informative content. Give users what they expect from you. Content plays an important role in blogging and you can’t increase blog traffic by using monotonous content.

Step 5: Use of tools

When it comes to increase blog traffic, few people rely on blackhat tools and look for short cuts for internet traffic. It is strongly not recommended to use any automated tool such as website traffic generator or free traffic generator. If you are worried about how to get traffic on blog then rely on your skills and use right tools. Being a SEO Strategist myself, I use Google Analytics for this. Here is how to use Google Analytics to understand audience and built better blog audience.

Steps to analyse audience by using Google Analytics

Login to google analytics

Choose the property (your website)

Click on Audience (left hand side menu)

Select “Overview”

Google Analytics Step 1 -Increase Blog Traffic

As you can see in above image, audience overview will give you a brief about your audience type and you can check basic details such as:

Demographics

  • Language
  • Country
  • City

System

  • Browser
  • Operating System
  • Service Provider

Mobile

  • Operating System
  • Service Provider
  • Screen Resolution

Most important menu is “Interests” under “Audience” in Google analytics. It’s because you can get complete information of your user interests and their behaviour. Majorly there are two types of categories you can find under “interests”.

  1. Affinity Category
  2. In-Market Segment

Google Analytics Step 2 -Increase Blog Traffic

The affinity category represents the lifestyle of audience. For example hoppers/Value Shoppers, Technology/Mobile Enthusiasts, Media & Entertainment/Movie Lovers, Lifestyles & Hobbies/Green Living Enthusiasts, Media & Entertainment/Music Lovers, Food & Dining/Foodies and Food & Dining/Fast Food Cravers. This will help you to choose the promotion platform for your blog.

On the other hand “In-Market Segment” category identifies the groups of users that are in the market for specific product categories. This data can help publishers get advertising revenue from the top in-market categories. It can also help e-commerce companies define exactly what products their visitors are interested in. Keep in mind, though, Google has just started developing In-market categories so the category list and their coverage in certain geographies may be sparse, but over time more categories and coverage will become available.

Once you are done with user’s interest, analyse User’s Flow within the same “Audience” menu in Google analytics.

You can analyse the users flow by adjusting filters for the upper drop down list.

Google Analytics Step 3 -Increase Blog Traffic

As you can see in the picture, I did a small country specific user behaviour analysis for my blog. You can adjust the filters according to your research. Collect all numbers and include it in your Audience Strategy list to prepare a best strategy.

Hope this information on increasing blog traffic by building a blog audience answered the question “How to increase blog traffic”.

If you have feedback or suggestions for this information then do comment blow.

As we all know that 80% of searches to the business are driven by search engines in the form of search queries related to business. Every search query contains Keywords (phrases) related to business and search engines provide results according to it. For example if you search for any particular product such as “Red Shoes in (Location) then you might get results of certain e-commerce companies according to their SEO score. Let’s assume you are running an institute which provides educational services and have multiple branches of your institution. Now you are looking to reach out local audience because the searches for “Institute near me or (location)” is having a good conversion rate.

In order to get into SERP for this location based keyword, you can create pages within your main domain and generate content related to services.

Curiosity Pages/Campaigns

Sounds strange but the impact of this technique is very high. Creating curiosity between people gives maximum results. Because the number of visits are higher than regular offers, discount and attractive offers. A user could avoid an attractive discount offer but he/she might not miss to visit the website if he/she is curious to know. For example when apple launched its first TV commercial in 1984. Company designed a TV advertisement of duration 45 seconds and out of 45 seconds they talk about brand for 5 seconds and showed their logo for just 3 seconds at the end. It was a huge marketing risk because the found of company Mr. Steve Jobs put more than 80% of his money on this campaign but he knew that it is going to work. Curiosity creates more impressions and brand awareness than any other campaign.

It is a good practice in SEO as well. You can drive more traffic by creating curiosity in audience. For this you can follow given below steps.

Dive into public forums

First step is to get into public forums and start a conversation. Share your product/services and let people talk about it. You can also question services and encourage people to take part in conversation and share their feedback. Create polls and provoke positively to generate curiosity.

Merge your marketing idea with current trend

We all have already heard about following the trend but it’s hard to follow this in SEO practices. In order to follow this technique, we have to create the best marketing strategies. The best option to do this is to create a subdomain or use existing subdomains. On these domains you can create pages and generate content related to trend and divert traffic to main domain. Using MEME Templates, Current affairs, Using controversial stories and creative info-graphics are part of this.

Given below are few examples of merging marketing strategies with current trend.

Challenging audience

Throwing a challenge on your existing audience will give your website an amazing hike in website engagement. You can try creating a promotional temporary page in subdomain where people could come and take part in it. Throw challenge like “You can’t solve it”, “Nobody can solve this”, “Only I can solve it”, “Hey do you have brain more than MR. ABC (Any fictional character name)”, “Do you want to know?” and “ I know you can but it’s hard for you”.

These are few challenges which can be used to encourage audience to take part in challenge and visit your website. These campaigns drive the best engagement.

Tip: It is always recommended to run challenges on subdomains and direct traffic to main domain. For this create temporary promotional pages which can be edit or removed later.

Google Image SEO Tips: Image Optimization for SEO

Recently Google has updated its policy for search engine results for images. Every SEO professional is aware about the importance of Google Image SEO. It gives us an additional option to enhance traffic and generate backlinks in easiest manner. If we build backlinks by using images, we can generate some high quality backlinks which are not at all easy to generate by text or any other format. Because of its importance in web content, search engines built strong metrics and encouraging website owners to optimize images for better SEO results.  Today, I am going to share few amazing Google image SEO tips which can help you drive more traffic.

Use of ALT attribute for image description

Images are easy to remember by humans and help us to drive engagement and kill the bounce rate at the same time. It’s very easy for us to convey our message to website visitor by placing an image or info-graphic. But search engine crawlers are not humans, they are bots and in order to make them understand about image property we use “ALT” text which is a description of image for crawlers. Google and other major search engines don’t look for all images. Being a website owner it’s your job to let them know about your website images.

Why “ALT” attribute is important in image optimization?

Everyone has internet access and most of the time internet speed is good but imagine a situation when a user is viewing your website on a browser that is slow because of internet speed and unable to show images. Or the browser does not support images. It would be hard for the user to understand web content. For example your website contains steps with pictures and user is not able to see pictures.

Let’s take another example; hypothetically a visitor is using alternative technology such as screen reader which has no function to find images then visitor would not proceed further on your website or blog. But if you are using “ALT” attribute correctly, you can solve this problem with ease.

Avoid Generic Names

There are billions of website which provides information and have images but not every site use customized names for each and every image. Usually website owners upload images with generic names such as image.jpg, pic.jpg, abc.gif, xyz.png and 123.gif and sometime its date formats. Instead of following this practice, use customized names which can give you a chance to use more keywords with images.

But do not over stuff images with keywords. Keep it simple and short for example:

Good practice: seoguy.jpg

Google Image SEO good practice

Bad Practice: best-seo-platform-seoguy.jpg

Google Image SEO bad practice

You should always avoid stuffing additional keywords in image name. It is a myth that adding keywords in image names could give you additional SEO benefits. It is not at all a good practice for Google image SEO

Create Image Sitemap

Creating image sitemap is another way to let Google and other search engines to inform about website images. It helps search engines bots to crawl all images of website. You can follow Google guidelines for Image Sitemap to take help while creating image sitemap.

Deal with Decorative images

Any non productive image is considered as decorative image. For example background images, button images, borders images and image frames. The best option to deal with decorative images is using CSS stylesheets or applying CSS when it is required. Use CSS to define background color and borders. If needed you can create frames and adjust background textures as well.

Pro Google Image SEO Tips:

  1. Use png-8 to cut down the size of a GIF image
  2. Use compressed images instead while using for banners and wallpapers.
